MURAL REVEAL!

(A look back on a pretty cool project)

To celebrate the launch of Thieves Beasts & Men, I turned to one of my first loves - painting! My book release party was held at Blur Nightclub in downtown Dunedin, and as part of the celebration, I offered to paint a mural on the building, to be revealed at the event. This is a pretty tourist-heavy town, so what better way to spread the word than to have a giant "advertisement" for my book right on Main Street??

Above is a shot of the finished mural, complete with dramatic morning shadows splashed across the wall!

In total, the mural took about 12-14 hours, spread across 4 days. For someone tragically afraid of heights, even a tiny ladder "scaffolding" felt like a death trap. Thank god I survived. Every time I looked at the ground, all of 24" from my feet, I had my doubts. But by the end of day one I was a mini-scaffolding pro. This was my first mural, but I chose not to freak out about the pressure, opting instead to see it as just another (though bigger) painting. I am THRILLED with how it came out. You may not be able to tell from the photo, but the copper nouveau-style outline, and the Thieves Beasts & Men reference in the corner, was painted with a special effects paint made to mimic real copper. It's not glittery, it's "foiley". And it doesn't disappoint. When the light hits it just right, it's pure metallic perfection. I do very much hope this mural leads to others. The experience of painting it, and the event, were simply the best!

Scroll down to see the work in progress, and a few shots of the event itself. I don't have many of those though - I'm as terrified of having my photo taken as I am of a 2' ladder.
